Desoto Wall Mural
Desoto Wall Mural is located on Hwy 76, Childersburg
five miles west of the caverns. This 120 foot by 6 foot painted
concrete mural shows Hernado Desoto being greeting by the Coosa
Indian Mico (Chief) at the nearby Desoto Caverns in 1540. The
colorful, dramatic scene was painted by Carlton Sims of Birmingham
in 1984. The project required three months of extensive research
by the Childersburg Beautification Board into the clothing styles,
jewelry and general appearance of the Spanish explorer, the expedition
and the Coosa Indians. The mural is an authentic reproduction
of this historic event, including the Coosa Indian Capital itself
as described in DeSoto;s expedition journals, This meeting was
the first time the Indians had ever seen horses and met lavishly
outfitted European men with strange light skin and bearded faces.
